Industrial Solvent: Methanol is commonly used as a solvent in various industrial processes, including manufacturing chemicals, resins, and pharmaceuticals. It is highly effective at dissolving a wide range of substances.

Fuel: Methanol is used as an alternative fuel or fuel additive in some countries. It can be used directly in vehicles equipped with methanol engines or blended with gasoline to produce a fuel known as M85 (85% methanol, 15% gasoline).

Antifreeze: Methanol is a key component in the production of antifreeze and de-icing solutions used in automotive and aviation industries. It helps prevent freezing and corrosion in engine cooling systems.

Chemical Feedstock: Methanol serves as a feedstock in the production of various chemicals, including formaldehyde, acetic acid, methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE), and dimethyl ether (DME). These chemicals are used in manufacturing processes for plastics, adhesives, and other industrial products.

Fuel Cells: Methanol can be used as a fuel in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs), which generate electricity through the electrochemical reaction of methanol and oxygen. DMFCs have potential applications in portable electronic devices and vehicles.

Biodiesel Production: Methanol is used in the transesterification process to produce biodiesel from vegetable oils or animal fats. It acts as a catalyst in converting triglycerides into methyl esters (biodiesel) and glycerin.

Laboratory Reagent: Methanol is commonly used in laboratories as a solvent for various analytical and biochemical procedures. It is also used as a denaturant for ethanol in laboratory-grade ethanol solutions.

Surface Cleaning: Methanol is utilized as a solvent for cleaning surfaces, particularly in industries such as electronics and optics, where high-purity solvents are required.

Denaturant: In some countries, methanol is added to ethanol to make it unsuitable for human consumption. This process, known as denaturation, is done to avoid alcohol taxation and prevent recreational consumption of ethanol.
